Some people have a "savior complex." They want to rescue everyone from their problems. They want to take everyone with them even if those people represent weight that holds them back from success. They don't want to let go believing they have a responsibility to care for others in a way that only God can.
Everyone can't go.
The journey of our lives is set on course. Only a specific number of people are appointed to you for that purpose. As you travel, you will meet people, work with people, become friends with people; but many of these people will exit your life unexpectedly. They offer you instructions and wisdom to carry you to your next. They are not meant to be in your life forever.
Recognizing and letting go of people is difficult. They often leave without notice and our detachment leaves us hurt, often feeling betrayed. It is imperative we identify the needs of our lives and identify those people sent to meet those needs. In my book, "The Path - Discovering Your Life's Purpose," I talk about our need for "path finders." These people enter your life to provide clarity on direction and purpose. They prevent you from missing it due to the burdens and cares of daily living.
While it seems difficult to leave people behind, everyone has a path and must discover the purpose of their lives. Eventually, they will also let go and leave people behind, or be weighed down, preventing them to moving swiftly toward life's promises and prosperity. The sooner your let go, the faster you will finish your life assignments. You will be happier and at peace as you focus deliberately on what is and is not for you.
Life is not a lonely road. It becomes lonely when we do not attach ourselves to the right people for our journey. We want to assimilate ourselves with people who think, act, and speak like us. We will never become mature associating with people who struggle with the same insecurities and proclivities that hold us back from greatness. Surround yourself with people who have achieved what you envision for your life, not people who reside at your current address.
It is hard to say good-bye to your past, but it is better to look into your future and say hello.
"As for us, we have all of these great witnesses who encircle us like clouds. So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life's marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us." - Hebrews 12:1 The Passion Translation
